Hunters Moon, Wareham Dorset Tuesday 3rd March - Saturday 7th March 2015
Our furthest trip so far! Hunters Moon is a Caravan Club site (we recently joined). The A350 felt very narrow in places!
The site is lovely, huge pitches and very clean facilities. This site must get very busy in summer. The trees are all bare at the moment which make it seem very light and open. The are hardstanding and grass pitches although the grass pitches which are near the play area are currently closed for winter. There are fully serviced pitches near the entrance. Lots of birds around we saw a "flock" of around 10 bullfinches never seen so many together.
Wednesday we drove to Swanage on to Studland and then caught the ferry to Sandbanks.
We completed the circle back to the site.
Thursday we went to Corfe castle - it was closed for staff training. We did enjoy the walk from the NT car park to the castle and back to the car. We drove on to Swanage and wandered around the town and along the seafront.
Friday we had planned to visit Brownsea Island just off the coast in Poole Harbour. As we drove into the harbour we could see the ferry tied up. We hurriedly found a parking spot in an expensive car park and rushed off towards the ferry. As we approached we noticed there were very few people around the boat. We could see just two people on board who were washing down the deck, they told us the ferry would not be running for another month! This was not turning out to be a good day. In order to get the most of our parking fee we wandered along the harbour, explored the few shops that were there and had a cup of coffee. Still anxious to turn this day around we decided to give Corfe Castle another try. This time it was open
The Castle is on a very steep hill, there are lots of interactive information points that tell the story of the Castle. The views over the Dorset countryside are wonderful. In the afternoon we drove to the nearby tank museum at Bovington. This was another interesting place to visit. There are a huge number of tanks on display. Your entrance ticket can be used for return visits for a year. I think if we had been staying longer in the area we would have gone back again as I am not sure we saw everything.
Friday evening we decided to try out the local pub The Silent Woman which is just down the road from the Hunters Moon site. We drove to the pub, It is a shame that there are no footpaths on this busy road as we would have preferred to have walked. The pub was empty apart from us and a couple of locals. The food was pleasant and there was a good selection of beers mostly from local Dorset breweries.
Saturday morning we packed up and were on our way home just after 10.00am. Returning to the storage yard the ground was so wet and muddy we couln't get onto our slightly sloping pitch. The owners moved us temporarily to another pitch while the pave and gravel ours. Excellent service.
